While others believed the novel touched universal issues such as accepting homosexuals and interracial relationships. Some reviewers felt the book had a weak plot or too much of a personal tone displayed. At the time the book was controversial, arising many different opinion and emotional perspectives from the readers. Another Country, novel by James Baldwin, published in 1962. For this reason, Baldwin is important to American culture because he explored the sensitive essence of love, racial discrimination, and homosexuality in one of his bestselling novel, “ Another Country”, which appeared in 1962. The same loneliness Rufus felt from the pressure of discrimination and not being accepted can be channeled from James Baldwin personal experiences as he battled understanding the different mindset of his era. As a result, he commits suicide, for the loneliness was too much to bear. Soon this love becomes hate, and he destroys her physically and emotionally as he destroys himself as well. For a while Rufus feels loved and accepted, but he then realizes that he cannot love and accept Leona because she cannot relate to him. Rufus never really feels accepted because of this difference until he met Leona who seems to see through the color barrier. So, he turns to his friends whom he loves, yet despises because they are white. Rufus Scott an African American musician isolates himself from his family for months as his career crumbles which causes loneliness in his life.
